Discogram
How Are Discograms Performed?
Discograms are examinations of the intervertebral disc space
(the space between the vertebral bodies of your spine). They
are used to determine which of your discs are damaged and
if those discs are causing pain. A needle is guided in to
the disc space between the vertebrae. Dye is then injected
to "test" the disc to see if it is one of the pain
generators. Discograms are diagnostic studies and do not provide
pain relief.
Discograms can show if the disc has tears in the outer ring
(called the "annulus"), and if the disc has begun
to rupture. Usually, multiple discs are examined to compare
a normal disc to the disc causing problems. The information
obtained with a discogram may help your physician in making
further treatment decisions or recommendations. The results
may confirm the necessity for surgery.
